World Ocean Day: What It Means to Us at Keyport

Keyport Crab Fishermen fishing the bering sea for king crab during stormy seas.

June 8—World Ocean Day—is one of those moments that makes you stop and think a little differently about what you do every day.

At Keyport LLC, we process Alaska crab. That’s our business. But really, everything we do starts with the ocean. Without a healthy ocean, there is no crab fishery. And without that fishery, there’s no Keyport.

So for us, this day isn’t just a headline or a post—it’s personal.

We’re a family-owned company, and we’ve always thought about the business in terms of the long game. Not just the next season, but the next generation. That mindset fits pretty naturally with the way Alaska’s fisheries are managed—carefully, conservatively, with a focus on sustainability. It’s one of the reasons we’ve chosen to operate in this space.

We depend on people making good decisions—fishermen, regulators, scientists—and we try to do our part on our end. That means working with responsible harvesters, maintaining high standards in how we handle product, and trying to get better every year at reducing waste and improving how we operate. Nothing flashy, just doing the right things consistently.

At the same time, there’s no ignoring the fact that the ocean is changing. Anyone connected to this industry sees it. Seasons shift. Stocks fluctuate. Things don’t always behave the way they used to. That reality forces you to think differently. It forces discipline. It forces patience.

For me, it comes back to a pretty simple idea: if you want to be in this business long-term, you have to respect the resource. There’s no shortcut around that.

World Ocean Day is also a good time to recognize the people behind all of this. The crews out on the water, the processors, the teams moving product across the country—this is a tough industry, and it runs on hard work and accountability. We’re proud to be part of that chain and to represent Alaska crab in the market.

At Keyport, we don’t claim to have all the answers. But we do know what we depend on. And we know that if we take care of the ocean—and support the systems that keep these fisheries sustainable—we give ourselves and the people we work with a real shot at being here for the long run.

That’s what World Ocean Day means to us.
