Is Crab Healthy?

You likely know that King crab, Snow crab and Dungeness crab are among the most sought-after seafood items available. But did you know that these beloved crabs also have some powerful health benefits?

It’s well-known that eating fish is good for your health. In fact, many nutritionists recommend eating at least two portions of fish every week.  While planning out your seafood meals each week, don’t forget crab, which packs in protein, minerals, vitamins and healthy Omega-3 fatty acids.  Read on to learn more about crab’s stellar health benefits.

Great Source of Protein

Crab is one of the best sources of protein available, containing nearly as much protein per ounce as even the most protein-rich meats. Unlike meat, however, which is high in the saturated fats associated with coronary disease risk, crab is much lower in saturated fats.  A 3-ounce portion of crab contains only 85calories, 1g of fat and a hefty 20g of lean protein!

The protein found in crab is a complete source of protein, supplying each of the 20 amino acids your body needs to make new proteins. Since our bodies break down protein on a constant basis, a protein-rich diet is essential for rebuilding your muscles and tissues.

High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Crab meat is not only low in fat and high in protein, it contains huge amounts of omega-3 polyunsaturated acids. Omega-3 fatty acids provide protection from various types of heart disease and also aid in the development of the brain. Even better, the omega-3 fatty acids in crab meat are of the long-chain type, which are the most beneficial for your health, because they can be absorbed immediately.

Low in Calories

Crab is extremely low in calories, with most of the calories directly attributable to the protein.

Between 80% and 85% of crab meat calories come from the protein. A nine ounce of King crab has 60 grams of protein and only 240 calories. By comparison, a nine ounce serving of beef has close to 700 calories with only 45% of the calories coming from the protein. For healthier dinners both at home and out, opt for crab.

Boosts Cardiovascular and Brain Health

Crab contains impressive amounts of Vitamin B12, which is essential for producing healthy red blood cells.  It helps to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and has also been shown to support brain function.  So, including crab in your diet can literally provide a boost to both your heart and brain!

Prevents Cell Damage

Crab meat contains a high content of selenium, which is a mineral considered to be essential in preventing damage to tissues and cells that can be caused by free radicals. Selenium also has a very positive impact on the function of the thyroid gland, protecting it against various types of oxidative damage, which allows the thyroid to continue producing hormones normally.

Improves Eyesight

Finally, crab meat also contains large amounts of vitamin A, which is responsible for maintaining and improving your eyesight. The organic compounds contained in vitamin A, (retinal, retinol, retinoic acid, and beta-carotene), all contribute to the health of your eyes by preventing macular degeneration and the onset of cataracts.
